Black screen after “sleep” on Windows 7 HTPC

HTPC

  • Zotac H55-ITX-C WiFi
  • Core i3 640 (3.06GHz) CPU
  • 4GB Corsair RAM (DDR3 1333Mhz)
  • Windows 7 64 bit OS
  • BlackGold BGT3600 TV tuner

Issue

HTPC doesn’t come back from Sleep mode. Computer turns on, but only black screen is displayed. HTPC is also not accessible via network, i.e. not responding to PING. Hibernating is not affected.

Solution

In most of cases this sort of behaviour is caused by a hardware or driver issue. It’s worth disconnecting all external and PCIE devices. If this resolves the problem, re-connect them one by one until you find the offending device. Then try updating driver and firmware.

In this particular case issue was resolved by upgrading  Zotac H55-ITX-C WiFi motherboard’s firmware to the latest version.
