Came across a strange Windows 8 / Google Chrome bug this morning.
If you pin Google Chrome executable (C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe) to the Start Screen, it vanishes as soon as the browser is closed. Actual shortcut stays in %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. If you try to pin Google Chrome again, it creates a second shortcut copy and so on, but the tile from Start screen keeps disappearing.
This is how I managed to keep it stick:
- Navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and create a new shortcut to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe (depending on your system and settings chrome.exe may be installed in different location) - Rename your shortcut to “Google Chrome” (or however you want it to appear on Start Screen)
- Go to Start Screen search (WIN+Q) and search for “Google Chrome” (name you have chosen in step 2)
- Right click on “Google Chrome” and Pin to Start
Windows 8 Pro
Google Chrome 22.0.1229.94
