Terminal Services Gateway stops working after removing SharePoint 3.0

Issue

After removing SharePoint 3.0 from Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2008, Terminal Services Gateway stops working. This in turns causes issues with Remote Web Workplace (RWW). The Terminal Services Gateway service fails to start with following error:

Windows could not start the Terminal Services Gateway service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Quick look into System Logs shows that the dependency service in question was Network Policy Server service.

Even ID: 7001
The Terminal Services Gateway service depends on the Network Policy Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
Unspecified error

Surely enough, trying to start Network Policy Server service manually trows following error:

Windows could not start the Network Policy Server service on Local Computer.
Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

Resolution

The issue was caused by Network Service not having sufficient permissions the access VSS. To resolve:

  • Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\VssAccessControl.
  • Open NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE and change its value from 0 to 1.
  • Open Task Manager and kill iashost.exe process (or alternatively, restart the server).
  • Start Terminal Services Gateway service.
