Windows 10 – Windows Update gets stuck downloading updates

Issue

Windows 10 PC cannot finish downloading updates. It always gets stuck on the same percentage no matter what.

Resolution

The issue was resolved by deleting everything in “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution” folder. I had hard time deleting some files in this folder even after stopping Windows Update services, so I finished this in Safe Mode. To boot to Safe Mode in Windows 10:

• Open Run dialong (WIN + R)
• Type msconfig and press Enter
• In System Configuration window, Boot tab, select Safe Mode and click OK
• Confirm Restart in next dialog.
